At this time you cannot right click a file on your computer for an option to “Open with Google Docs” or “Open with Google Docs”. Hopefully, this will be eventually added via an update or add-on in the near future.

Edit Excel files in Sheets

Although there are many ways to interact with a MS Excel document, we wanted to highlight the below instructions for editing an Excel file within Google Sheets. Working with Excel this way provides you the ability to easily collaborate with other users on the same document. These instructions were taken from Switching to Sheets from Microsoft Excel.

Open an Excel file from Drive and edit it in Sheets. Any changes you make are saved in the original Excel format.

Chrome Browser only

  1. Make sure the Office Editing for Docs, Sheets, & Slides extension is not installed:
    1. Open Chrome Browser and in the top-right corner, click More (3 vertical dots) > More Tools > Extensions.
    2. If you see the Office Editing for Docs, Sheets, & Slides extension, click Remove.
  2. In Drive, double-click an Excel file.
    1. A preview of your file opens.
    2. At the top, click Open with Google Sheets.

You can now edit, share, view version history, collaborate in real-time with others, and more. All changes you make are saved to the original Microsoft Office file.

Open a Word document

  1. In Drive, double-click a Word file.
